In order to raise awareness of these vulnerable birds we will be running a week full of fun events from crafts and games to shorebird safaris and even creating a giant sand art picture with local sand art organisation Soul2sands. Below is the listing of the events throughout next week. All events are free but donations are welcome! of dry weather resulting in a large shortfall in average annual rainfall. Summer
temperatures were also anomalously high. The year was brought to a close with a
short sharp cold snap resulting in several days of ice cover across the
Reserve. It should be noted that the long-term averages are taken from Boulmer
as this is closest place with a reliable long-term data set. Lindisfarne will
have a slightly different micro-climate but the rainfall, temperature and wind
should be broadly comparable.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><u>Rainfall<o:p></o:p></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Right from the outset 2022 was dry. January recorded just 11.6mm
of rainfall; far below the average of 58.07. As can be seen from figure 1; once
the shortfall of rainfall began it never recovered with 10 out of 12 months
being drier than average. This resulted in a 217.4mm rainfall deficit in 2022
or just 68.4% of annual average rainfall. This had a profound effect on the NNR
with many slacks drying out and remaining dry throughout the rest of the year
even when rainfall increased at the back end of the year, indicating that the
water table was extremely low and struggling to recharge. Many of the orchid
species came through late or not at all. Species that did emerge were often
stunted and scorched due to lack of available water. The dunes experienced two
separate wildfires; one in April and a second occurring in July. This is unprecedented
as the preceeding 20 years only had a single occurrence. Whilst the fires were
likely to have originated from human activity the dune grassland had to be in a
tinderbox state for the fires to spread as readily as they did. Luckily when
the fires occurred the wind was light and the robust NNR wildfire action plan
meant that the fires were put out quickly and losses amounted to 2 acres of
dune grassland.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p><u>Wind</u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Thankfully after storm Arwen in November 2021; the wind in
2022 was kind to us. February was the windiest month with gusts regularly
exceeding 40mph and peaking over 60mph. After February high pressure was in
charge for extended periods leaving the Reserve with settled, calm conditions.
The wind rose below shows the prevailing wind throughout 2022 was
westerly/south-westerly as would be expected across the UK. Northerly winds
were a rarity but there was frequent bout of south-easterlies. This aided the
impressive shorebird productivity this season with generally light winds
resulting in little sand blow and minimal swell during spring tides.<o:p></o:p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-gEfCj44N-YKRUQgsDDXwND0doF83F64pqHrI0P8iybhBlPiKq1BFaIF39eGHhI1MjduRPe7w-_i48HgNdEDohfA_tpbRxg_KnkHBE4xhAnjUz0BAQHLWjq-1FkJ7Uwac4a76T2-DcC4vevO_q0ev4VK9BIVdWlB20BwDwIEetRCIQ9tvppXKIkezvA/s2817/Wind%20Rose%202022.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1615" data-original-width="2817" height="366" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-gEfCj44N-YKRUQgsDDXwND0doF83F64pqHrI0P8iybhBlPiKq1BFaIF39eGHhI1MjduRPe7w-_i48HgNdEDohfA_tpbRxg_KnkHBE4xhAnjUz0BAQHLWjq-1FkJ7Uwac4a76T2-DcC4vevO_q0ev4VK9BIVdWlB20BwDwIEetRCIQ9tvppXKIkezvA/w640-h366/Wind%20Rose%202022.png" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Wind rose showing the prevailing wind direction during 2022 </td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p class="MsoNormal"><u>Temperature</u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Lindisfarne NNR never experiences extremes of temperature
due to its position nestled up against the North Sea. The sea forms a warming
blanket in the winter and a cooling effect in the summer, meaning generally
milder conditions prevail.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The UK saw record breaking temperatures this summer, topping
40 celcius in three separate locations but Holy Island still experienced
several days above 26 celcius peaking at 27.7 celcius on the 19th
July. Temperatures were higher on the mainland with temperatures in the low
30’s experienced widely along the Northumberland coast. Night-time temperatures
hovered at a sweltering 17/18 celcius for three consecutive nights making it
feel more like a night on the Costa del Sol!<o:p></o:p></p>

to thank all those that came and visited the Reserve and respected the shorebirds refuge areas. The breeding shorebirds had a fantastic season with 38 Little Terns pairs and 26 Ringed Plovers nesting and
successfully raising 49 and 33 chicks respectively. <o:p></o:p></p><p>This year we had 5 seasonal wardens and a wildlife warden funded through the EU Life WADER project. This is more staff presence than we have ever had before and alongside our passionate volunteers; directly contributed to the increase in productivity this season. Having more feet on the ground meant they were able to closely monitor the progress of the shorebirds and directly engage with thousands of visitors to the Reserve.</p><p>Ringed Plover surveys were carried out early in the season by staff and volunteers to establish early breeding territories across the Reserve.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsfqcse_bWOdjawoblR7RMPenLHvWhW4XyPRo_8zyQJvK7tVIJSjti5y8S7MBt0O6xaWBAK3uCdSOamjpYhkQJElleTKyNcIOothwuSbxosTYUfCAOVjV0F9XejXJEwBlWD2fFdEklox9RPaZRek5LdlduMGt61CpCplgcMmAAIKHCA8b0KtsaMnDCTg/s1210/BL9A2158.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1210" data-original-width="980" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsfqcse_bWOdjawoblR7RMPenLHvWhW4XyPRo_8zyQJvK7tVIJSjti5y8S7MBt0O6xaWBAK3uCdSOamjpYhkQJElleTKyNcIOothwuSbxosTYUfCAOVjV0F9XejXJEwBlWD2fFdEklox9RPaZRek5LdlduMGt61CpCplgcMmAAIKHCA8b0KtsaMnDCTg/s320/BL9A2158.JPG" width="259" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">Adult Ringed Plover</span></i></td></tr></tbody></table><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhurMkGl8vwIRFSOjdcuoRyOaw-Z_LL9HE985uY6fVVCaUGnULwiquw_xEqOymBuM-zqwMe9-HTL-LTd6o2q_HtAnUVw3W1xJxYA13rKSSMWxDorfJJzSD2JVurgt4WlUb1INY1u4XBSQpwMygMSaekkojvuuEHPSK5YRFIbYwqjZmKZybskzucsr8O_w/s1276/rINGED%20pLOVER%20NEST%20cropped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="948" data-original-width="1276" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhurMkGl8vwIRFSOjdcuoRyOaw-Z_LL9HE985uY6fVVCaUGnULwiquw_xEqOymBuM-zqwMe9-HTL-LTd6o2q_HtAnUVw3W1xJxYA13rKSSMWxDorfJJzSD2JVurgt4WlUb1INY1u4XBSQpwMygMSaekkojvuuEHPSK5YRFIbYwqjZmKZybskzucsr8O_w/s320/rINGED%20pLOVER%20NEST%20cropped.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Ringed Plovers lay eggs directly onto the sand and are extremely vulnerable to disturbance. Unfortunately, at Ross Sands the Little Terns never properly settled at their usual location and a loose dog that ran through the colony for nearly an hour with no owner in sight was the nail in the coffin. Fortunately, the birds relocated to the south of Ross Sands. Protection areas were quickly installed and the number of nesting birds grew steadily within this quiet area as visitors were guided away from the colony and the wardens were able to show them the birds form a safe distance.</p><p>Once the Little Tern and Ringed Plover chicks hatched, the foreshore areas directly in front of the colonies were fenced off. This was due to the chicks being very mobile when they hatch. Ringed Plovers can run as soon as they are out the egg and will spend all day running from the foreshore to the top of the beach while the parents try and keep them all together and teach them to feed in the wet sand below the high tide line. Little Terns will also bring their chicks down to the foreshore. This is a critical time. At this stage the chicks are unable to fly and so are incredibly vulnerable to disturbance. Thankfully, most people respected the protection zones and were very considerate and understanding of the protection areas and nesting shorebirds.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDr09ZR3e1BjwB1q5ixYTuGShDHae1kX-4it10YSQFpDzbWOVCSd9HmUKwJfb-Oghn_ShF-bNtVdnqKusrkfZojXEBOcq0P7MnvxCgoFvv4r5BOq0DVPUob1KsM3MLne4qkK9zU4ah8wPUmKKJ2ZPZNkQb9gAMDUMUwJCc9FPDWLgUFx5q0rGkQn5frQ/s1600/Little%20Tern%20feeding.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="995" data-original-width="1600" height="199" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDr09ZR3e1BjwB1q5ixYTuGShDHae1kX-4it10YSQFpDzbWOVCSd9HmUKwJfb-Oghn_ShF-bNtVdnqKusrkfZojXEBOcq0P7MnvxCgoFvv4r5BOq0DVPUob1KsM3MLne4qkK9zU4ah8wPUmKKJ2ZPZNkQb9gAMDUMUwJCc9FPDWLgUFx5q0rGkQn5frQ/s320/Little%20Tern%20feeding.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Litte Terns courtship feeding</i></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Luckily the weather gods were in our favour this summer as there was no strong storms and the spring tides were relatively low meaning that no wash outs of scrapes occurred. Having more wardens meant that we were able to engage with more people than ever before, welcoming visitors to the Reserve and talking about the plight of the Shorebirds that use the coast. Unfortunately, breeding Ringed Plover numbers have dropped by 65% nationwide in just 30 years and this has been echoed here at Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve; putting Ringed Plovers on the Red list. The main factors for the declines are habitat loss and increased recreational pressure on the coast. The protection areas and refuges are a vital part of the protection of Ringed Plovers and other shorebird species, allowing birds space to breed, feed and roost as well as accomodating many different species of birds migrating through at the start of spring and end of summer. Due to the Shorebird protection scheme at Lindisfarne NNR we have managed to largely halt declines and see impressive productivity when weather and tides don't interfere. Below are the shorebird numbers across the Reserve this season.</p><p></p><table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="MsoNormalTable" style="border-collapse: collapse; border: none; mso-border-insideh: cell-none; mso-border-insidev: cell-none; mso-padding-alt: 0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-table-layout-alt: fixed; mso-yfti-tbllook: 1536; width: 629px;">

However, the dry weather is a theme that has been on going since the start of the year. <div><br /></div><div>We installed a weather station on the island in November last year and it is already beginning to yield some interesting results. The weather station will allow us to establish long-term
data sets on the NNR and enable us to see trends develop as the climate
changes. It will also allow us to cross analyse the weather data with other
research such as hydrological data and bird numbers to discover if there is a
significant correlation between different variables. For a
comparison the Met Office 30 - year average at Boulmer has been used, as this
is the closest station with a reliable long-term data set.</div><div><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><u>Rain<o:p></o:p></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Total rainfall to date in 2022 is 151mm at Lindisfarne NNR
compared to an expected 30-year long term average of 246.8mm. This means Lindisfarne
NNR is running 95mm below average or 62% of rainfall in 2022 so far. The only
month that ran above average was February with January being particularly dry as can be seen in the table and graph below.<o:p></o:p></p>

The botany in the dunes is coming into full bloom with carpets of Orchids and other wildflowers such as Yellow Rattle and Lady’s Bedstraw. The dune grassland is bounding with Skylark and Meadow Pipit chicks as adults furiously feed them.

On the beaches of the Reserve, shorebirds are also well into nesting season. Ringed Plovers, Oystercatchers, Little, Arctic and Common Terns have all made it to the crucial stage of hatching and now the chicks are roaming around the shoreline. From the time that they arrive and set-up territory they have to navigate their way through multiple close calls and challenges and this season has been no different. Laying eggs on the dry sand on the beach they are extremely vulnerable. Predators from both the air and ground can take eggs and even adults before they have the chance to incubate. Tidal inundation is always a worry but thankfully the nesting sites, by and large, have survived a couple of spring tides. Lastly, they have to navigate disturbance caused by increasing recreational pressure on the coast. This is the area that we, humans can help the most. By reading all signs when entering the Reserve, being aware of birds using the beach and keeping a dog on a short lead or at heel and prevented from disturbing any wildlife or bird at all times on the Reserve as per the byelaw can have huge benefit on the breeding success of these vulnerable birds. <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJIv8dl91xBYD6u1AZzrAO_bAuIa-hKWzvNptngRULqxxoHUovUrsud4aR0mCH5K8LostEyIAuSPuxwgz4TBYYQsLTZxQ8aA2PdljO1bHUtkytKx2l2phNSvf-jqVbuJbvC5hmD03Dsgh0xfEYLnREhH_Ka64WhUTSOfpvEvAQvSuYhpTYq_wzkLg4bA/s7000/Little%20Tern%20brooding.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4664" data-original-width="7000" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJIv8dl91xBYD6u1AZzrAO_bAuIa-hKWzvNptngRULqxxoHUovUrsud4aR0mCH5K8LostEyIAuSPuxwgz4TBYYQsLTZxQ8aA2PdljO1bHUtkytKx2l2phNSvf-jqVbuJbvC5hmD03Dsgh0xfEYLnREhH_Ka64WhUTSOfpvEvAQvSuYhpTYq_wzkLg4bA/s320/Little%20Tern%20brooding.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Litte Tern brooding chicks (Kevin Simmonds)</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div> We are aware of the large outbreak of Avian Influenza that is ongoing and causing devastation amongst the local seabird colonies. into. The formal events list is available on our blog website and posters in
the Chare Ends car park and bird hides across the Reserve. There will also be
pop-up events regularly occurring throughout the year so keep up to date with
all our social media feeds for more information. Natural England are
celebrating the 70th anniversary of first National Nature Reserve
designation this year so look out for a special event this summer celebrating
the NNR and the amazing nature that thrives within Lindisfarne National Nature

Data was collected by NNR staff, volunteers, an MSc Student from Newcastle University with data forwarded to Ecological Consulting for independent analysis. Several letters, emails and phone calls were also received by NNR staff relating to the scheme. These have been collated to draw together the following key findings:<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="mso-list: l2 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18pt;"></p><ul><li><span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span><!--[endif]-->The current byelaw about keeping dogs on lead or close at heel to prevent the disturbance of wildlife was not sufficiently clearly explained, which meant that visitors to the NNR believed they were keeping to the byelaw with their dogs off their lead running or walking some distance from themselves.</li><li><span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span><!--[endif]-->There was very low awareness by the general public, including local people, that there is an existing a byelaw within Lindisfarne NNR requiring visitors to keep their dog under close control.: <i>bringing into, or permitting to remain within the Reserve; (i) any dog unless it is kept on a lead or at heel and is prevented from worrying or disturbing any animal or bird, or (ii) any other animal</i></li><li><span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span><!--[endif]-->Visitor numbers have increased significantly to the NNR in the last few years and those areas of the NNR which were once relatively undisturbed are now attracting increasingly large number of visitors.</li><li><span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span><!--[endif]-->The existing Shorebird Protection Areas continued to be effective in providing a refuge for breeding, roosting, and feeding shorebirds and the 2021 season witnessed the highest count of breeding Little Terns and Arctic Terns since formal recording commenced in the early 1970s.</li><li><span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span><!--[endif]-->Disturbance surveys indicate that walkers with and without dogs, impact breeding & non-breeding shore birds across the NNR.</li><li><span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span><!--[endif]-->The Dog Zonation scheme was successful in reducing disturbance to the key areas in the red zones (and supporting higher bird numbers as a consequence), where disturbance from dogs (and people) was generally at only a very low level. Dogs were frequently observed off-lead and overall disturbance levels were very high in the southern part of the Budle Bay amber zone, in the Chare Ends amber zone adjacent to Holy Island village and along the Pilgrim’s Way. The analyses showed that the levels of disturbance were such that waterbird numbers of a range of species in these areas were reduced (though other species appeared more resilient to disturbance).</li></ul><!--[if !supportLists]--><o:p></o:p><p></p><p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="mso-list: l2 level1 lfo1; It has been a busy start to 2022 and thankfully we have been blessed with glorious wall to wall sunshine throughout much of January making it feel very spring like at times. </p><p>Last week, the cattle, who have been munching their way through much of the rank grasses across the Links since October, left the island. They have done a fantastic job and we should see the effects of their work in spring when the botanically rich dunes burst into flower. The sheep, who have been doing a similar job in the Snook, left a few days later. They have been also tackling some of the invasives such as Michaelmas Daisy. </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiajdU4FG0AN1Mo3vZI6wDheAscwajF3vyJnf3HNjqnJzAodk5C1m4J1OYnuvfOGCA6hImwMCTPKAaVFNC42FwBYRI3lMJUzNBxFEo4QlbEos5et14wfY8N_os2se9SZKfO5O_yctGaKaeIUXnNhMpjHAUbL866vMj4eKIoqnXxBkyjTYI6Io_E2YlNrA=s1280" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiajdU4FG0AN1Mo3vZI6wDheAscwajF3vyJnf3HNjqnJzAodk5C1m4J1OYnuvfOGCA6hImwMCTPKAaVFNC42FwBYRI3lMJUzNBxFEo4QlbEos5et14wfY8N_os2se9SZKfO5O_yctGaKaeIUXnNhMpjHAUbL866vMj4eKIoqnXxBkyjTYI6Io_E2YlNrA=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cows gathered ready to be taken off the island</td></tr></tbody></table><p>We also had our first event of the year yesterday - a beach clean on North Shore and luckily the weather gods were on our side. Sixteen volunteers and members of the public joined us on a beautiful winter's morning to scour the shore for litter. A lot of litter, tyres and fishing gear has washed up in the winter storms, particularly in the wake of Storm Arwen; leaving plenty for people to get their teeth stuck into. The large amounts of rubbish that washes up on the shore is only a fraction of what is floating out there. Small bits of plastic can be mistaken for food and rope and monofilament fishing line can be sources of entanglement for shorebirds and marine life.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjcVj_2n816TjGcInsJcpSxDSROk4E5F6mdMOdVwVSvCFEN4_OW2xCHAf6aD3sQ1z7Ti4uI0_WOhv6vrliEG-oTNCOMIIezFYPHe6wenyzF_NmGDNuRiP-iw5xKYziVf9NEgj3X2tfro_PlBhrIYyVkdZ_QqVXrO55jVLWenZXZkdc56CVnPaA1UKKNaA=s2016" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1512" data-original-width="2016" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjcVj_2n816TjGcInsJcpSxDSROk4E5F6mdMOdVwVSvCFEN4_OW2xCHAf6aD3sQ1z7Ti4uI0_WOhv6vrliEG-oTNCOMIIezFYPHe6wenyzF_NmGDNuRiP-iw5xKYziVf9NEgj3X2tfro_PlBhrIYyVkdZ_QqVXrO55jVLWenZXZkdc56CVnPaA1UKKNaA=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Volunteers amongst a pile of rubbish on the North Shore</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p>Thank you to everyone that came out to lend a hand. Storm Arwen struck the Northumberland coast at full force last Friday evening with northerly winds peaking at over 100mph. A testament to the ferocity of the storm was a 90 year-old Holy Islander who said he had never seen anything that strong from the north in his lifetime! The storm left a trail of destruction with whole swathes of forests flattened, structural damage to buildings and hundreds of thousands of people left without power.</p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-opkWyogC8DU/Ya9dU24QxOI/AAAAAAAAEXI/RSeHKmIEieoJ7rHXwvllKQRcWce2Z7DqwCNcBGAsYHQ/s1008/Storm%2BArwen%2Bwarnings.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1008" data-original-width="651" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-opkWyogC8DU/Ya9dU24QxOI/AAAAAAAAEXI/RSeHKmIEieoJ7rHXwvllKQRcWce2Z7DqwCNcBGAsYHQ/w259-h400/Storm%2BArwen%2Bwarnings.png" width="259" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">The Met Office warnings associated with Storm Arwen and Lindisfarne NNR location</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /> Here at Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve we were smack bang in the middle of the rare Red Met Office warning area. The strongest of the winds arrived overnight into Saturday, luckily on a falling neap tide meaning damage to the Reserve was reasonably light. However, the causeway was significantly damaged by the strong currents as the tide rose. Our bird hides suffered some damage to roofs and screens. Several trees were also down across fences and we lost several signs.<div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q1aM672E1W4/Ya9_YmCyVXI/AAAAAAAAEXQ/5mQLATl8KgUV9Htju5mgevt1gtyzv3X-gCNcBGAsYHQ/s2016/storm%2Bdamage%2Bto%2Bthe%2Bcauseway.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1512" data-original-width="2016" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q1aM672E1W4/Ya9_YmCyVXI/AAAAAAAAEXQ/5mQLATl8KgUV9Htju5mgevt1gtyzv3X-gCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/storm%2Bdamage%2Bto%2Bthe%2Bcauseway.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Storm damage to the causeway</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--pMWrn6mZIs/Ya9_ce5dNBI/AAAAAAAAEXU/vGZNsfRXidEikdc9U2Xmj5UttGVAToRXwCNcBGAsYHQ/s2016/Welcome%2Bsign%2Bwashed%2Bup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1512" data-original-width="2016" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--pMWrn6mZIs/Ya9_ce5dNBI/AAAAAAAAEXU/vGZNsfRXidEikdc9U2Xmj5UttGVAToRXwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/Welcome%2Bsign%2Bwashed%2Bup.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Welcome sign was washed further down the coast from the causeway. Now thankfully retrieved</span></td></tr></tbody></table><div><p>However, the thing that suffered the most, as always, was the wildlife. Stormy seas prevented birds from feeding and the severe cold and wind chill accompanied by the exceptional winds meant that all there energy was focused into keeping warm. A storm surge accompanying the winds caused the intertidal area to be covered for longer periods than normal depriving Wildfowl and Waders from the mudflats and essential food.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kEgx7l6pNKk/Ya9__4Jw8aI/AAAAAAAAEXg/JYlB7QBxLQ42chaaUn5Eb4T4gMdMbUKUgCNcBGAsYHQ/s2016/Dead%2Bmans%2Bfingers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1512" data-original-width="2016" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kEgx7l6pNKk/Ya9__4Jw8aI/AAAAAAAAEXg/JYlB7QBxLQ42chaaUn5Eb4T4gMdMbUKUgCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/Dead%2Bmans%2Bfingers.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Thousands of pieces of Dead Man's Fingers<i> (Alcyonium digitatum)</i> - a species of soft cold water coral - were ripped from the seabed owing to the power of the storm</span></td></tr></tbody></table><p>During winter it is vital that the wintering bird populations are not disturbed as many of the birds at Lindisfarne NNR have migrated thousands of miles to reach this protected oasis. When they arrive they are almost on deaths door having used huge amounts of energy to fly here. All their time is spent feeding up and resting, gaining fat reserves to make the daunting journey. </p><p>Regular disturbance effects the birds in two ways. Firstly birds waste important energy resources and fat reserves flying away from disturbance sources. If this happens frequently enough the birds won't lay down enough fat reserves to keep warm through the winter months and to make the long journey back to their breeding grounds in the high arctic thus resulting in a death sentence for many. Secondly, the feeding grounds on the Reserve are intertidal with many species feeding on the worms and molluscs within the mudflats or on the eel grass beds. This means that the feeding areas are only uncovered by the tide for certain parts of the day. If the birds are moved off these areas the amount of time they can feed is vastly reduced resulting in less fat reserves and less resilience to bad weather. Please be aware of feeding birds when visiting the coast and give them the space they need to feed and rest.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p></div>Lindisfarne NNRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08821237229486721268noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5449611708840012300.post-37044953971405875052021-11-19T16:00:00.000+00:002021-11-19T16:00:17.534+00:00November update<p> When the clocks go back and bonfire night is over it always
feels as if the winter has set in and Christmas is looming on the horizon but
the remarkably mild weather has meant that I have barely broke out the winter
coat yet! This time of year is always so special with thousands of wintering
wildfowl and waders utilising the expansive mudflats and eelgrass beds to feed
and rest after migrating from the high arctic. Vast aerial displays of Golden
Plover and Knot can regularly be viewed and the chattering of hundreds of
Light-bellied Brent Geese feeding close into the causeway is always an amazing
sight.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">It is a tricky time of year to get essential practical works
complete, fighting against the tides and the limited hours of daylight.
However, this hasn’t stopped us getting stuck in with some of our regular
volunteers as we commenced our practical task days again for the first time in
2 years. First up was clearing patches of Montbretia – a lovely garden plant
but has escaped and become established in some parts of the dunes. This forms a
monoculture and outcompetes native species resulting in it’s quick spread. We
have also been tackling areas of scrub regeneration which can take hold and
spread across the floristically diverse dune slacks around the Snook. We will

above the horizon casting pink and orange hues across the sky. We will still be
holding some pop-up events so keep your eyes peeled on our social media sites and

the 2022 season over the winter months. All events are free so please drop-by

<p class="MsoNormal">Now the dust has settled over the frantic last few weeks of
the breeding season we can finally sit down and analyse the results of the shorebird
breeding season. The preliminary findings are broadly positive for Terns but
Ringed Plover breeding territories are down. There were record numbers of
Arctic Terns breeding across the Reserve with good productivity. Little Terns
were doing very well with Lindisfarne NNR holding all the North Northumberland
birds with 76 pairs, the highest level since records began. Sadly, the weather
hit us with a cruel blow when the spring tides accompanied with a strong
northerly wind resulted in large proportion scrapes getting washed out at one
of the 4 protection areas, in late June, despite a valiant effort from our staff
and volunteers.<o:p></o:p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SALuSoNus6I/YV1rI7qosFI/AAAAAAAAEU0/rtT-YsKF7B0gd0rFjjz8XA2RzZ82NxbiQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/2U9X0194.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1215" data-original-width="2048" height="190" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SALuSoNus6I/YV1rI7qosFI/AAAAAAAAEU0/rtT-YsKF7B0gd0rFjjz8XA2RzZ82NxbiQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/2U9X0194.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Record numbers of Arctic Terns ©JJD</span><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="background: rgb(253, 250, 240);"><o:p></o:p></span></p></td></tr></tbody></table>
<p class="MsoNormal">Ringed Plover breeding attempts were lower across the board
despite approximately 3,500 migrating through the Reserve in spring, often utilising
the protection areas as a safe haven to roost and feed. A combination of high
tides and disturbance were the likely cause for pairs failing at egg stage or
just giving up entirely. This was particularly evident at Budle Bay where
immense visitor pressure has been the likely cause of no pairs attempting to
breed for the first time in many years. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The first wildfowl began arriving in late August. To me they
always herald the end of summer and a return to the dark cold mornings filled
with the cacophony of calling Geese as they move from roosting to feeding site
– a real treat to experience and probably my favourite time of year. The
Reserve currently holds over 2,500 Light bellied Brent Geese and over 10,000
Wigeon although these numbers will swell significantly as new birds
continuously arrive into October. Pink-footed Geese were late this year but can
now be heard and seen flighting in and out of the Reserve.<o:p></o:p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ueKfV6-WFdk/YV10xewCAPI/AAAAAAAAEVs/F155sJOeCxgIzv2DoJZTTycVWOmY2Sm0gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1054/6D8A6923.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1054" data-original-width="808" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ueKfV6-WFdk/YV10xewCAPI/AAAAAAAAEVs/F155sJOeCxgIzv2DoJZTTycVWOmY2Sm0gCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/6D8A6923.JPG" width="245" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Brent Goose are back on the Reserve for the winter ©JJD</span><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="background: rgb(253, 250, 240);"><o:p></o:p></span></p></td></tr></tbody></table><p class="MsoNormal">September is also the month that we turn our attention to
the return of livestock to the Snook and Links to carry out conservation
grazing. As usual a herd of cattle have
returned to graze the Links area of the island. These cows are specially
selected for their calm demeaner. Sheep will return to the Snook where they
will graze movable 1 hectare fenced blocks. The livestock remove much of the
rank grasses that have grown up through the summer months and reducing the
height of the sward. This allows the diverse range of botany unique to dune
ecosystems to burst through by next spring. The sheep also nibble away at
invasive plants such as Michaelmas daisy and occasionally some Pirri-pirri Bur.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--gG1nT44HXk/YV1z8i1nJoI/AAAAAAAAEVU/h6OnwNp7oucgvcCJ9okDldLkjwYtC96wQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Cattle%2Bon%2Bthe%2Blinks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--gG1nT44HXk/YV1z8i1nJoI/AAAAAAAAEVU/h6OnwNp7oucgvcCJ9okDldLkjwYtC96wQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Cattle%2Bon%2Bthe%2Blinks.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Cattle on the links </span><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="background: rgb(253, 250, 240);"><o:p></o:p></span></p></td></tr></tbody></table><p class="MsoNormal">Our events programme is back in full swing, staging a wide

However, the cool northerly wind and occasional drizzle wasn't enough to dampen the spirit of our hardy young explorers who took part in a spot of Rockpool bingo!<div><br /></div><div>We scoured every nook and cranny to see what strange and interesting creatures lay just beneath the shallow pools just using the powers of observation</div><div><br /></div><div>It is important not to roll over any large rocks within these pools. The rocks are small micro habitats for many marine creatures so rolling over the rocks destroys these habitats and can potentially crush any creatures that are living underneath them.</div><div><br /></div><div>We also used a bathyscope to get clear views underwater of Hermit Crabs scurrying along the seabed and a Sea Lemon stuck to the underside of some kelp.
